Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and Steroids

Every four years when the Olympic games roll around steroid scandals and rumors of steroid abuse abound and the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games don’t appear to be any different than the past. Some of the most memorable moments of Olympic history are surrounded by steroid drama, starting with Olympic sprinter Ben Johnson in 1988 and continuing through Marion Jones’ continuing battle with the Olympic committee.

So far this year we’ve seen U.S. swimmers testing positive and swimmer Julien Dunkley was removed from the U.S. swimming team. Greek sprinter Tassos Gousis was recalled from the Games when he tested positive for methyltrienolone, which is chemically similar to the steroid known as Trenbolone or Tren for short. Greek weightlifters have also been under fire for months prior to the 2008 Beijing Olympic games.

Additional problems have been seen on the Romanian track team where two runners tested positive for EPO, Russian track athletes being banned for doping and a Chinese triathalon champion who was banned for 2 years. Searching Google for “beijing 2008 steroid ban” will give you over 60,000 results currently.

With steroids being so high profile in sports, it’s no wonder that the Olympics in Beijing would drag many skeletons out of the closet. I would expect to see the controversies continue throughout the games and wouldn’t be at all shocked to see several athletes be caught after winning and stripped of the medals they won at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
