Using a Weight Lifting Belt with a Back Injury
Weight lifting belts are often used in the weight room, sometimes properly, sometimes just as a fashion accessory more than anything else. However, the one time that you really need a weight lifting belt is when you have sustained a back injury. Using your belt correctly here can mean the difference between aggravating your injury or getting better quickly while still keeping your lifting routine. Here are a few tips to use for how to using a weight lifting belt when you have a back injury.
First and foremost, if you have a back injury that really troubles you, you should not be lifting without the advice of a doctor. This is especially true if you think that you have any kind of spinal injury, as the muscles, bones, and tendons around your spine are very tender. If you just have a badly pulled muscle a doctor will be able to tell you what exercises you can do to strengthen it so that it gets better quicker, and if he thinks that it will help you he can also tell you what kind of weight lifting belt you should buy, how to wear it, and what exercises you should and should not be doing.
If you don’t have a serious back injury, but have just tweaked your back a little bit, a visit to the doctor might not be completely warranted. However, the best way for your back to get better is still to rest it. If you still want to get to the gym to workout you can wear a belt while you are lifting other body muscle groups. This will keep your back in alignment and make sure that you don’t turn your small back injury into a more serious one while you are loading weight onto the bar for bench press.
If you suspect that you have a back injury, you should always visit your doctor before you start lifting again. While resting is the best way to make sure that your back gets better quicker, if you want to keep up your workout routine, you can still lift other muscle groups, while wearing a belt to make sure you don’t injure your back any more.
